Kobánya, which means quarry in Hungarian, is the 10th district of Budapest and one of the largest. Located in southeast Pest, it can be easily reached from downtown by Metro 3, whose terminal station is Kobánya-Kispest. Traditionally it was associated with organized labour and industrial activities, but today it is an area for the middle classes and commercial activities have replaced industry. Different architectural styles combine in various areas of Kobánya. Buildings in Buda and northwestern Hungary were raised with limestone mined in Kobánya area. The tunnel network created for mining during the past five centuries are a source of problems today, but in the past, it offered ideal conditions for beer brewery. One of the clay-mining pits which was traditionally used for the brick industry is now a fishing lake. It is located inside the public sporting park situated in the south-eastern corner of the district. Another tradition was wine-making and Csosztorony, a small vineyard watchtower stands proof today, in the middle of the Ohegy area. Following the destruction of the vineyards by Phylloxera, beer-making companies moved into the area, and the light beer Kobányai Vilagos produced here became a national drink. The centre of Kobánya is adorned with a beautiful Catholic church, build in late 19th century Art Nouveau and Neo-Gothic style. It was dedicated to the knight-king St. Ladislaus and its very tall bell tower and the roof are covered with colorful porcelain tiles. The altars and the pulpit are adorned with fine Zsolnay ceramic work. The Greek-Catholic Trinity Chapel is one of the oldest buildings in Kobánya. It was built around 1740 and is worth visiting for its fine Baroque altar. The north-eastern corner attracts visitors to a large fashionable shopping mall called Arkad. The largest public park in Kobánya and the most significant green area of the capital, Nepliget, hosts a large Planetarium. Rottenbill Park, named after a former Burgomaster of Pest, contains an impressive red granite statue of Don Quixote. The synagogue located in Cserkesz Street has an octagonal inner structure and its eastern façade is decorated with miniature turrets. International fairs are held every year at Budapest HUNGEXPO in the north of Kobánya.
