Komtar is also known as Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak or more accurately “The Menara KOMTAR”. It is one of the tallest buildings in Penang. Located at the central part of Georgetown city, the skyscraper is also the tallest building in Asia though it is only the 6th tallest in the whole of Malaysia. It prides itself with 65 storeys, 760 feet height with a 12-sided geometric block and sits on a strong 4 floor podium. It covers 11 hectares of land space and is one of the most ambitious projects done bythe Penang Development Corporation.

Designed by Architects Team 3 or AT3 of Singapore, the building comprises offices, shops, restaurants, hotels, malls, commercial spaces and several recreational facilities. It was subdivided into five phases before it completed its function.

The complex was named in behalf of the late Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein, the second Prime Minister of Malaysia. He himself piled the first materials of one of the building phase in January 1, 1974. It was in 1978 when this part of the complex was done. For the next several decades the building was initially completed and was open for commercial use.
