Located only a few yards from the National Mall and just to the south of its Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial honors the service of the men and women involved in the bloody conflict that raged between 1950 and 1953 on the Korean Peninsula. The Korean War Veterans Memorial consists of 19 statues of soldiers (dispersed over a large lawn, as if they were walking towards battle) set in the middle of a triangle bound by two granite walls and open on its third side. The granite walls, highly polished and of a deep "academy black," have photographic images taken during the war sandblasted into them, which creates a highly unique effect and adds to the historical value of the memorial. The memorial was inaugurated in 1992 by former President George H. W. Bush, having been approved by Congress in 1986. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and operated by the National Park Service.

Visitors are not charged to enter the memorial as it is public, however visits are only allowed during regular park hours, from dawn to dusk roughly.
