Kota Kinabalu International Airport is a public airport located in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia and is located just 8 kilometers from the city center. It is owned by the Government of Malaysia and is operated by the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad. Passing more than 4 million passengers beginning FY 2006, it is the second busiest airport in the country.

The airport started as a military airport called Jesselton Airfield after Kota Kinabalu’s previous name. It was severely damaged during World War II. At the end of the war, the Department of Civil Aviation rehabilitated the airport and opened it for public use. Today, it is very important point of entry to Borneo and the state of Sabah.

There are 19 airlines – regular, charters, and seasonals – operating domestic or international flights in Kota Kinabalu International Airport. Facilities in the airport include duty free shops, lounges, various shops, restaurants, travel agents, public restrooms, and public telephones.
