Krasnoselsky District, in Moscow, is mostly occupied by railroads, rail yards and three rail terminals around Komsomolskaya Square. The district contains the northern part of Basmannaya Sloboda, including the church of Saint Peter and Paul built at the beginning of the 1700s. The name comes from Krasnoye Selo, meaning beautiful village. The village was separated from Moscow by a swamp. Komsomolskaya Square is one of the busiest squares in Moscow; it contains a blend of revivalist Tsarist and Stalinist architecture. It is informally referred to as Three Stations due to three ornate rail termini situated here. The Garden, or B Ring is a circular avenue around the centre of Moscow. 17 streets and 15 squares build up the Ring totaling 16 kilometers. The narrowest point is Krymsky Bridge with 6 lanes, the widest is Zubovskaya Square with 18 lanes. The Ring replaced fortifications in the 1820s with ramparts. Lubyanka Square is not far from Red Square. It is best known for the building housing the headquarters of the KGB. In 1990 a monument to the victims of the Gulag was erected here. Kuznetsky Most is a hilly street that runs from Lubyanka to Bolshoi Theatre. It has, for many centuries, been the place where you could find the most fashionable shops in Moscow. Its name means Blacksmiths’ Bridge as it ran along the Neglinka River to a bridge leading to Cannon Court, the biggest forge in the medieval city. Tolstoy’s famous character, Anna Karenina was described shopping here. Pushkin, Chekhov, Rasputin were attracted by the house at no. 9, hosting Yar Restaurant, which brought French cuisine in Moscow. Today, you can find Atlas, a map shop, which is well worth a visit if you are interested in this sort of things. But the main reason why Kuznetsky Most is visited remains the House of Foreign Books, at no. 18. The spirit of Moscow is best represented in its underground railway, one of the world’s most beautiful. You can visit the stations decorated with chandeliers and marble. One journey costs 22 rubles.
