The Kuan Yin Temple in Honolulu, Hawaii, is located at 170 N. Vineyard Boulevard in the multicultural Chinatown neighborhood. The temple is well-known among locals and visitors alike for its bright orange color and contrasting jade green tile roof. The roof curves up at the edges, which is said to protect it against any menacing evil spirits. Visitors will also notice the giant form of the ten-foot statue of the Buddhist goddess of mercy, Kuan Yin, for whom the temple is named, in the prayer hall.

People from all over who come to worship or just visit the temple are asked to remove their shoes when entering, whereupon they enjoy the soothing smell of incense, and can even add to the atmosphere by lighting a joss stick or bringing along a pomelo (a fruit similar to a grapefruit). A pomelo offering is the traditional method parents use to ask for the blessing of a child.
