Kungsträdgården

Kungsträdgården (“King’s Garden”) is a park in central Stockholm, Sweden. It is locally known as Kungsan and is divided into four sections: Charles XII Square, Molin’s Fountain, Charles XIII Square and Wolodarski Fountain.

The garden was first mentioned in historical records in 1430 as konungens kålgård (“king’s cabbage garden”). It was gradually transformed into an royal Baroque leisure garden.

The Charles XII Square is centered on the statue of Charles XII by Johan Peter Molin, which was inaugurated for the 150th anniversary of the king’s death in 1868. The statue of Charles XIII is a Neoclassicist composition by Gustaf Göthe, inaugurated in 1821. In 1824, four lions sculpted by Bengt Erland Fogelberg were added. Each lion is holding a ball carrying the Norwegian and Swedish coat of arms.

The fountain of Johan Peter Molin was originally carved in plaster and the in bronze. The fountain is inhabited by mythological characters, the ocean god Ægir and his wife Rán with their nine daughters, all listening to the river spirit Nix playing his harp. The six swans which offer fresh water are a late addition to the fountain.

In August 1998, 63 Sakura trees (“Japanese Cherry”) were planted around the park and they fill the park with their sent, each spring, when they blossom.
