Kuressaare Airport is situated 3km from the town centre of Kuressaare on Saaremaa Island on the Baltic coast. The first runway opened in 1930s, but the airport only officially opened in 1945. Between 1945 to 1953 ten to fourteen flights per day flew to Tallinn, but there was no electricity until 1958. The present airport terminal was built in 1962 and refurbished in 2007. A second runway was built in 1976. The main airline is Estonia Air. Kuressaare is a town within the region of Saaremaa, on the gulf of Riga. It was first documented in 1154, but in the 19th century became a popular seaside spa resort due to the healing properties of the local mud. There are various historical buildings to visit, such as the moated Castle, but tourists mainly visit for the spa treatments. Kuressaare is accessible by bus between Tallinn and Kuressaare, by ferry and by yacht. There are a few hotels to choose from, most having spa facilities, such as the Arensburg Boutique Hotel and Spa, which has four stars and is situated on the main street of the old town centre close to the castle park. The hotel offers a pool, saunas and spa treatments. A room here costs from 52 Euros per night. The Spa Hotel Ruuti also has four stars and is close to the yacht harbour and park.
