Built in the 1960s, the Kuwait National Museum was opened to the public in 1983. It originally housed two collections – the Al Sabah collection of Islamic Art also known as the Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyyah (DAI) and the national archaeological and ethnographic museum.

During the Iraqi invasion and occupation, the museum sustained severe damages so that by the time that the Iraqi forces were forced out, it was necessary to extensively restore the museum buildings and exhibits with the assistance of UNESCO.

After the completion of the museum reconstruction, one block is allocated for administrative offices and an auditorium while the 3 other blocks are allocated for various permanent exhibitions. There is a central garden in the complex and the 4 building blocks are interconnected by bridged galleries. The museum is open from Sundays to Fridays at 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
