Named for its location at the mouth ("boca") of the Riachuelo, La Boca is a neighborhood in Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires. It was originally settled by Genoese Italians (Italians from the city of Genoa) and its architecture reflects its early western European influence. The city has a very unique history, as it seceded from Argentina in 1882 after its citizens began striking. The attempted secession, however, did not produce any results. Former President Julio Argentino Roca came in person to remove the Genoese flag, which had been erected. After the incident La Boca never again attempted secession, and gradually its citizens became integrated with the rest of the capital. Today it is perhaps best known among locals for its football club, the Boca Juniors. It is also a favorite for visitors to the city due to its bright, local architecture and its many tango performances, both in clubs and in the street.
