La Canebiere

The Canebière or formerly Cannebiere is a street in the center of Marseilles, France, measuring 1 000 m, ranging from the Old Port Reformed. It includes, since 1927, Noailles street and Meilhan alleys. The name comes from the Provencal Canebière cannabis or canebe, meaning hemp, perhaps because of the hemp fields that were planted,
Canebière appeared in 1666. Situated between the Cours Saint-Louis and the gate of the ramparts, it is inhabited by large families. The manufacturer of galleys, Jean-Baptiste Chabert, built a mansion he rents to Jacques de Noailles, lieutenant of the galleys. His name remains attached to the street, the place which extends and covers the walls. Along the way there are two metro stations of the Metro Marseille: Noailles (M2) and Vieux-Port (M1)
The closest airports are Provence and Hyères and the nearest train station, Saint-Charles is located only 700 meters away from La Canebiere. Docks des Suds and Parc Chanot are also located nearby. Some of the main attractions in the area are: Noailles Gallery, Le Dome, La plaine, Quartier du Panier, Fort Saint Jean, the Arab quarter, Place Castellane and the Gare de la Joliette. Some of the nicest museums can be found here, as well: Palais Longchamp, Museum D'histoire de Marseille and MUSEE DES DOCK ROMAINS are only a few of them. Beautiful parks such as: Jardin des Vestiges and Parc du 26e Centenaire surround the area. The Institute of Training (IUFM), Faculty of Economics and Management and the Faculty of Law are installed on the Canebière.
