The La Plaine neighborhood of Marseille on the French Mediterranean coast is a lively
mixture of residential areas, restaurants, cafes, and pubs as well as a large open air
market. This centrally located area in the 3rd largest city in France with a population of
1.6 million was originally surrounded by the city wall built in 1667 until its demolition in
the early 1800s. The development of this region began in the late 18th century and
currently is home to over 30,000 people. It is located near the Prefecture, and two
hospitals and is well-serviced by Marseille's tram and underground lines. What La
Plaine- or Place Jean Jaures as it is also known as- is best known for its market which is
set up 3 days a week, from Thursday through Saturday from 8 am to 1pm. The market
sells mainly fruits, vegetables, other food products, and an assortment of typical
miscellaneous market items, but on Fridays one can find flowers for sale as well. Since
parking is not among the amenities of the neighborhood, it is recommended to use public
transportation where possible. In Marseille, as in other French cities, the popular Velo
bike rentals are inexpensive, conveniently located and extremely helpful in avoiding the
normal stress of personal transportation in France.

Marseille is known for being an extremely international city with a high number of
immigrants, particularly from north Africa and Italy, and as a result the cuisine in
Marseille is rather varied. If you are looking for seafood, Marseille will not disappoint
you. The prices of accommodations in Marseille will be a pleasant surprise, especially if
you have just come from Paris, and decent, centrally located hotels with basic amenities
start at around 55 Euros.
