The Alcala de Henares Cathedral is one of the most important historic buildings in the city of Alcala de Henares in Spain. Alcala de Henares as a city is considered to be one of the historical centers in the country as well as one of the very first bishoprics established in Spain. Located 35 kilometers northeast of the capital city of Madrid, the city of Alcala de Henares, whose name means the Citadel on the River Henares, has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has become a favorite tourist destination for travelers visiting the country. The Cathedral of Alcala de Henares was built between the years 1497 and 1514 and is home to the remains of Saints Justus and Pastor, two young Christian schoolboys who were martyred during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. While majority of the interior of the cathedral has fallen into disrepair, the Alcala de Henares Cathedral remains to be a remarkable example of religious art that was made during the seventeenth century, so much so that the cathedral remains to be one of the only two churches in the entire world that has been granted the special title of "Masterly Church" or "Magistral Church".
