The tourist centre of Barcelona is La Rambla, which is Arabic for riverbed. Initially, it was just a path parallel to the medieval wall, near a stream running through the centre of the city. Now it is a famous two kilometers avenue, lined with trees, bustling with various activities. It runs from Placa de Catalunya, a central square full of shops, restaurants and banks to the monument of Columbus on the waterfront. You can go to the top with the elevator and enjoy the scenic view of the port and La Rambla. Street performers and living statues are scattered all along this avenue. If you enjoy seeing living statues, you should also visit the Wax Museum, housed in a 19th century building, at the foot of the Ramblas. Lottery ticket booths, shoe shiners, fruit markets give the place its unique atmosphere. It is broken into five sections, with specific names and features. La Rambla de Canaletes is named after Font de las Canaletes. There is a legend that says that if you drink from the water of this fountain you will forever wish to return to Barcelona. La Rambla dels Estudis is called after Estudi General university. Some people call it La Rambla dels Ocells, avenue of birds, due to the many places selling birds. La Rambla de les Flors is where you can buy all sorts of flowers and visit the ancient Boqueria Market. La Rambla del centre and La Rambla de Santa Monica, full of street artists offering drawings and caricatures, will lead you to the harbor. La Rambla de Mar is on the beach and features an aquarium, restaurants and movie theatres and nightclubs. One of the funniest buildings on this avenue is Bruno Quadros House or Umbrellas’ House, with umbrellas decorating the faēade, whose owner became rich by selling this item. The Main Theatre is the oldest in the city, dating back to the 16th century. You will not have any dull moments while you are on this crowded street.
