La Rogativa Statue

The La Rogativa Statue in San Juan, Puerto Rico, depicts a religious procession which actually occurred in the city during the late 1700s, under government orders. Sir Ralph Abercrombie and his British armada troops sailed into the San Juan Bay in 1797, with the goal of overtaking the city. Spanish and Puerto Rican forces under the direction of Captain General Don Ramon de Castro were successful in fending off the first attack, however, Abercrombie's forces decided to try a new tactic and blockade the city's incoming ocean-bound supply shipments. In response to this, the governor ordered a “rogativa,” or religious procession, to help the city's residents. The women of San Juan took to the streets with bells and torches, which tricked the invading forces into thinking that reinforcements had arrived, thus repelling them permanently.

The bronze statue, which stands 12 feet high and overlooks the San Juan Bay, was done in 1971 by New Zealander Lindsay Daen.
