The Parisian Gothic chapel of La Sainte-Chapelle, or Holy Chapel, is located on the
natural island of the Seine, Île de la Cité, and was completed in 1248 as a chapel for use
by the royal family . The building was meant to be used as a reliquary, housing the relics
acquired by Louis IX such as Christ's crown of thorns and a piece of the cross of
crucifixion, but the relics are now currently stored in the nearby Notre-Dame Cathedral.
The chapel consists of two different sections consisting of the upper chapel and the lower
chapel. The upper chapel's Rayonnant style was reserved for the king and his family as
well as the reliquary, and the lower chapel with its low vaulted ceiling and darker colors
was reserved for the palace's parish. The upper chapel is the site of the oldest wall
painting in Paris which depicts the Annunciation and 1,113 scenes from the New
Testament on its 600 square meters of stained glass windows.

As a symbol of the divine right of kings, both the chapel and nearby Notre-Dame were
severely damaged during the French Revolution and La Sainte-Chapelle was restored in
the mid 19th century using drawings and descriptions of the original building. Previously
the church suffered damage by fire twice in two centuries.
