Lafayette Square, located in St. Louis, Missouri, began as a pasture for livestock during the period in the 1700s when the French held the city. Lafayette Square was converted into a community recreation area in the 1830s, and was named Lafayette after the Marquis de La Fayette, who visited the area during a U.S. Tour in 1824-25. A real estate crisis in 1837 drove many to abandon their land to the city, and much of the part bordering the park was bought by wealthy southern families, who built beautiful homes on the property. Today, the square is known as the oldest public park in the city, and the gentrification of the area which has been occurring since the 1970s has resulted in the rise of numerous restaurants and shops.
