It is also the town where two of the most memorable events in history took place. In the early 1900s, Guglielmo Marconi erected the very first high power transatlantic long wave wireless telegraphy station here, allowing the first point-to-point fixed wireless service between Europe and North America to take place in 1922.

Three years before the first wireless transmission ever took place two men -- John Alcock and Arthur Whitten-Brown -- completed the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean by landing just right outside the town of Clifden on June 15, 1919. In celebration of this momentous event, a memorial was erected on a hill situated a few meters away from the actual landing site during the celebration of the landing's 40th anniversary. The memorial is a sculpture of an aircraft's tail-fin with a plaque detailing the accomplishment of these two men.
