While exploring the historic whaling town of Lahaina, on the island of Maui, Hawaii, be sure to visit the Lahaina Jodo Mission, an authentic Buddhist Temple. Located on Puunoa Point, Lahaina, the temple overlooks the islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Kaho’olawe from its serene surroundings which match those of the great Buddhist temples in Japan. The original Lahaina Jodo Mission was located in a private house, from 1912 until moving to its present location in 1931. Although the wooden structure first built at the new site burned down in 1968, the new structure was built in 1970 to be in all ways authentic to the old Japanese traditions. Admission is free, and the Jodo Mission is open every day, during daylight hours. Today guests are free to explore the grounds, and enjoy the pristine calm of the Lahaina Jodo Mission. When visiting Lahaina, choose from fine hotels and resorts like the Lahaina Shores, the Ka’anapali Beach Hotel, the Royal Lahaina Resort, and the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. Area attractions include the Wo Hing Temple Museum, the Baldwin Home Museum, the Banyan Tree Park, Historic Lahaina, and Kaanapali Beach.
