Situated only 35 kilometers from Ljubliana in the Julian Alps of Slovenia, the glacial
Lake Bled is a popular tourist destination in the northern Balkans. This lake in northern
Slovenia formed from the Bohinj glacier and its crystal blue waters reach a maximum
depth of 30 meters. It is 2120 meters long and 1390 meters wide and due to its ideal
conditions for rowing, it has hosted the World Rowing Championships in 1966, 1979,
and 1989 and will do so again in 2011. Lake Bled is surrounded by woodlands and
mountains and in its center is the only natural island in Slovenia. The island is the site of
a 15th century church prefaced by 99 steps. Perched high above the lake's north shores is
a medieval castle. There are also three thermal springs that lead into pools open to the
public.
Accommodations found on or near the lake are often of the four-star star variety and offer
packages for spa services and skiing with prices starting around 80 Euros, but smaller
pensions also have many of the same services of the bigger hotels and offer the same or
lower prices. Camping during the summer is possible at one of the sites for backpackers
or caravans and spots start at 10 Euros.
