Alderman Fenwicks House

Hotels near Alderman Fenwicks House, Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom .

As the 20th most populous city in England, Tyneside in Newcastle Upon Tyne is also the sixth most populous conurbation in the United Kingdom. Dating back to almost 2,000 years, Newcastle's history shows that it was once controlled by the Romans, the Saxons and the Danes. However when it first inhabited it was known by its Roman name of Pons Aelius. The name 'Newcastle' was first termed during the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. Newcastle has come a long way in its 2,000 year history. Since its location is on the River Tyne, the town developed greatly during the Middle Ages and the Industrial Revolution where it played a major role. In 1882, it was granted city status and today Newcastle is known as an important major retail, cultural and commercial centre. One important historical landmark in Newcastle is the Alderman Fenwicks House. Considered as one of the most important houses in the North of England, the mid 17th century house has medieval origins which occupy two burgage plots. The oak stair which elevates to the lantern tower and the ceiling of the Great Room are an illustration of the 17th century period. Alderman Fenwicks House is also only one of two 17th century brick buildings that remain intact within Newcastle; the other being the Holy Jesus Hospital, which is a museum and tourist attraction. Alderman Fenwicks House has gone through many changes. In the late eighteenth century it became the Queen's Head. From 1880 to 1962 it was the Newcastle Liberal Club and by the late 1970s the building had become derelict. Even though consent for demolition had been applied, this was refused. As a result, in 1980s, structural and internal repairs were carried out by Simpson & Brown to convert the building into offices. Bad luck however was on a constant path with Alderman Fenwicks House. So much so that after the first phase of repairs had been completed in 1983, funding failed and the buildings stood empty for another thirteen years. However after new support from the Heritage Lottery Fund was established, work resumed and was finally completed in 1997-8. Alderman Fenwicks House is less than a mile away from Newcastle's city centre. Once there, you will find plenty of accessible hotels, providing spacious high standard rooms in a good location. The house is not normally open to the public.
