Lake Onondaga

Hotels near Lake Onondaga, Syracuse (New York), United States .

The 4.6 square-mile Lake Onondaga lies south of Lake Ontario, and a little northwest of Syracuse, New York. The magnificent history of this beautiful body of water dates all the way back to 1450, and perhaps earlier, when it was the site of Onondaga chief Tadodaho's acceptance of the Great Law of Peace, and the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy. Today, the lake has unfortunately become quite polluted, due to its proximity to industrial and sewage centers. Governmental laws in recent years have limited and prohibited swimming and fishing, although fishing was re-allowed in 1986, with caveats regarding the types of fish which were considered safe enough to eat. Much of the pollution stems from years of dumping of toxic chemicals like mercury into the lake by the Allied Chemical factories. In recent years a push has been made to restore this historic lake to its former condition and beauty, and visitors enjoy nearby trails and a public park.

Nearby hotels include the Genesee Grande Hotel and the Embassy Suites.
