Located in central Texas, Lake Travis is a man-made reservoir that is utilized for electrical power generation and flood control. As one of the seven Highland Lakes, its relatively large size and location on the Colorado River, enable it to serve as a water supply source for much of the surrounding area as well. It was created after the Lower Colorado River Authority commissioned the Mansfield Dam in 1942. While it was created for highly practical purposes, Lake Travis is today also widely enjoyed by recreational users. It has been stocked by numerous species of fish to encourage more fishing and additionally it is known to be one of the clearest lakes in Texas. Due to its location and reputation, it is used for boating, swimming, and picnicking regularly by Texans from within the Austin area and beyond. For those who are more free-spirited, Lake Travis also boasts a somewhat unique feature along its edge, the public park Hippie Hollow, at which clothing is entirely optional. Whether you prefer to don your latest fishing gear or leave your swimsuit at home, the beauty of Lake Travis is sure to delight any visitor to the Austin Area!
