Near the center of the nearly 900-year old city of Oldenburg sits the Lappan, a long-
standing symbol of the city's history. This former bell tower of the Holy Spirit Hospital
was built onto a pre-existing church in 1467 and it was one of the very few buildings that
survived the fire of 1676. At the time of its construction, the city of Oldenburg was
under the rule of the Danish king and despite being far from the borders of Denmark in
Lower Saxony, it was a Danish enclave for the time up until the fire when the ruined city
was abandoned by the Danish.
