Florianopolis is a state capital city that lies in the heart of one of the most historic and traditional areas of Brazil, along the Atlantic coast in the southern stretches of the country not that far from the Argentine border (from where many of the visitors to Florianopolis originate). Among the many attractions in the city, the old customs building which is known as the Largo de Alfandega to locals is a place definitely worth the visit.

The Largo da Alfandega dates all the way back to 1876, when it was built in stunning neoclassical design as the seat of government for the entire state of Santa Catarina. After having fallen into disrepair in the mid twentieth century, the building was restored and eventually began operating as a museum as of the mid 1980s, displaying not only the striking building itself and its contents, but furthermore exhibits relating to many of the notable historical figures that at one point or another passed through the marvelous building, contributing to local history. Located in the building are both the Brazilian Institute of Cultural Heritage and the Santa Catarina State Artists Association, which includes a gallery with frequent exhibits of notable local and national artists.
