Alexanderplatz

Alexanderplatz is located in the city center of Berlin, near the river Spree and the Berliner Dom and it is a large public square and transportation hub.

This place was originally a cattle market and it was named so in the honor of a visit of Russian Emperor Alexander I to Berlin in 1805. This square inspired the 1929 novel Berlin Alexanderplatz because together with Potsdamer Platz it was at the heart of Berlin’s nightlife.

Several notable structures are surrounding it, the Fernsehturm(the TV Tower) being the most important of them. This TV Tower is the second tallest structure in Europe. Along with the TV Tower, Alexanderplatz accommodates the Park Inn Berlin and the World Time Clock. The last one is a continually rotating installation that shows the time throughout the globe. Other interesting buildings from here are the Alexanderhaus and Berolinahaus designed in 1932 by Peter Behrens .

Even if in 1990 the change has come and Germany was unified, Alexanderplatz has still a socialist character, including the Fountain of friendship between peoples, but this socialist character is slowly swallowed by the capitalist symbols like the Alexa shopping mall which has approximately 180 stores and was opened in 2007.

Transportation to Alexanderplatz wouldn’t be a problem because this is a major interchange station for the U-bahn, S-bahn and regional trains in Berlin. Also the square has bus, trams and metro stations.
