As the site of some of the most well-known Upper Paleolithic art, the cave paintings at
Lascaux have been protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Four boys
and their dog discovered these 16,000 year old paintings in southwestern France in 1940,
though at the time they were unaware of the significance of their new find. Since their
discovery, the paintings have suffered from human exposure, the changing air chemistry,
and mold and have been closed to the public. Visitors today are invited to see Lascaux II,
a recreation of the cave paintings in a gallery cave 200 meters from the original site.

The paintings and carvings depict mainly animals such as horses, bulls, bison,
mammoths, wolves, felines and bears in addition to a human figure and abstract signs.
The art covers the ceilings of several connected caves, but arguably the most impressive
one is the Hall of the Bulls in which among the 36 animals represented, one of the bulls
measures 17 feet in length. The art was created with the use of mineral paints as the
artists wiped the outlines with mats of hair and then blew the paint through a tube of
hollowed-out bone or out of their mouth onto the flat surfaces.

Sarlat-la-Caneda which has many small hotels and bed and breakfast that start in the
range of 55 Euros and offer everything from simple French breakfasts to meals from a
full-service restaurant.
