Latimer House Museum

Hotels near Latimer House Museum, Wilmington (North Carolina), United States .

Originally built in 1852 as the private home of local merchant Zebulon Latimer, the Latimer House Museum has been the home of the Cape Fear Historical Society since 1963. Overlooking historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina, the Latimer House Museum is also a public museum dedicated to the display of an example of the style in which those within the upper-class of Wilmington lived during the Victorian period.

The Latimer House Museum itself is an Italianate-style building, perfectly symmetrical, with a hallway down the center of the building dividing two identical halves. The museum displays over 600 artifacts in 14 rooms, many of which are from the Latimer family. Especially notable is the solid marble fireplace, which was intended to burn coal, not wood, original gas burning chandeliers, and the Latimer House gardens, with stucco and lace-brick walls, planted with flora authentic to gardens of the Victorian era.

Located at 126 South 3rd Street in downtown Wilmington, the Latimer House Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 A.M. until 4 P.M., and Saturday from noon until 5 P.M. Guided tours are available for $10 per person, with children admitted for $5. Local hotel accommodations include the Wilmingtonian Hotel, Hilton Wilmington Riverside, Best Western Coastline Inn, and Stemmerman’s Inn.
