The Latin Quarter in Paris, France has received its name from Latin-speaking students of the University La Sorbonne. The district lies on the left bank of the river Seine, surrounding the University, which is among the oldest institutions for higher education in the world, dating back from the early 13th century. It is a district with small, winding streets, historical buildings and thousands of restaurants and bistros. Some of the traditional French dishes like fondue and tartiflette are on the menu here at very reasonable prices. Some of the landmarks of the district are the The Mosquee de Paris, Institut du Monde Arabe or the Musee de Cluny, occupying the site of the ancient Franco-Roman baths. The museum offers an overview of medieval life through its displays of manuscripts, tapestries and objects used in everyday life. Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle and Le Pantheon are other featured treasures of the district. The latter was modeled after the Pantheon in Roma, it started life as a church and was later used as a burial place for personalities like Voltaire, Emile Zola, Victor Hugo, Alexander Dumas. St. Julien le Pauvre claims to be the oldest church in Paris, one of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture. Notre-Dame de Paris, the most famous cathedral in the world and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, is built on l’Ile de la Cite. Stained glass and rose windows, the Gallery of chimeras, gargoyles and the bell tower Emmanuel are among the many treasures of the cathedral. Point Zero is located just in front of Notre Dame and is the point from which all distances in France are measured. If you climb the 387 steps to the top of the cathedral, you will enjoy a spectacular view of the surroundings. Square Viviani claims the oldest tree in Paris, an acacia robinia tree. There is an open-air market, a few crepes stands and a great wine store on rue Mouffetard with its attractive cobblestone passages. The clothing chains on Bulevard St. Michel but also the bookshops attract lots of tourists and locals alike. The centre of Quartier Latins is adorned with the beautiful fountain in Place St. Michel. The place is packed with tourists and at night, you will find fire-eaters performing in front of visitors. Among the finest Paris monuments and typical Parisian cafes and restaurants, visitors of the Latin Quarter will never spend a dull moment while they are here.
