Latvian National Opera

Hotels near Latvian National Opera, Riga, Latvia .

After the unceremonious exit of the Russians in 1991, the Latvian National Opera in Riga
was one of the first buildings to be refurbished as it is an important symbol of Latvian
culture and unity. The Lativian National Opera was originally founded in 1912, the
National Opera Chorus in 1918, the Latvian National Ballet in 1922, and the Latvian
National Orchestra in 1926, but the building that now houses the four organizations was
built on the site of an old German theater in 1863. The building that was constructed as
the new national theater burned down in 1882, but was quickly rebuilt to its current
design. In 1991, major reconstructions began on the ailing building which had suffered
through Soviet times, though as a result of the limited funding of the new government in
a time of complete national renewal, not much was able to be completed. But then
Latvian émigrées in New York started the Latvian National Opera Guild which raised
funds for the reconstruction efforts over the next 4 years. In 1995 Riga's grand Opera
house reopened. In 2001, an addition was completed that included a new exhibition hall
and office space for administrative and creative staff and the facilities are open for tours
to the public. A list of upcoming concerts, operas and ballets is available on their
website.
