The park's history dates back to 1968, when the land which it now occupies was donated by wealthy St. Louis resident Mrs. Matilda Laumeier in honor of her late husband, Mr. Henry H. Laumeier. Some ten years later, in the late 1970s, the Laumeier Sculpture Park was created out of the land which she dedicated to the city of St. Louis. Today the Laumeier Sculpture Park receives approximately 300,000 visitors annually.
