Le Jardin Marjorelle

Le Jardin Marjorelle is a botanical garden in Marrakech, Morocco. It was designed by the French artist Jacques Majorelle in 1924, during the colonial period when Morocco was a protectorate of France. The special shade of bold cobalt blue which he used extensively all around the garden is named after him – bleu Majorelle.

In the garden visitors can also find the the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakech, which includes exhibits of North African textiles from Saint-Laurent’s personal collection and also ceramics, jewelry and paintings by Majorelle.

A beautiful bamboo “forest” and an arid cactus garden with species from around the world can be seen here. But what visitors find most stunning of all are the flowering masses of red and purple bougainvillea. They can also see the garden’s fountains and three large pools. The one next to the museum is filled with golden carp.

The Majorelle Gardens are open every day from 8 AM until 7 PM. The garden has also a little café where visitors can enjoy a quiet breakfast. The gardens close for lunch and reopen at 3 PM.

In the northeast corner of the garden, visitors will find a small boutique which sells an interesting array of quality local handcrafts including clothing, jewelry and leather products such as bags, sandals and beautifully bound notebooks.
