The Vieux-Port in Marseille, France offers a scenic view of the Frioul islands and the Palais du Pharo (Pharo castle). Boats cruises can take you to the Iles du Frioul and Chateau d’If, made famous by Alexandre Dumas’ Comte de Monte Cristo. The castle has a central square and three huge towers and even the dungeon can be visited. A dam connects the other two islands Pomegues and Ratonneau. A hospital was built here, used for quarantine ships and prisoners with plague. Because of the winds, the landscape of the islands is deserted. Pharo Palace is set on the Maure promontory where you can see the Chateau d’If and the Islands of the Friuli, together with the entrance to the Vieux-Port and a beautiful panorama of the Mediterranean Sea. Some of the rooms are restored and used for receptions, conferences and seminars. Occasionally there are art exhibitions that take place here. The garden houses the tropical medicine Institute.
