The small, rural Italian island is situated just off of the Venice coastline though it is void
of all of the usual chaos of life in bustling Venice. Today this island is populated mainly
by farmland, but it was once hailed as a popular holiday resort for Venetians looking to
escape the busy city. It once was used as a main source of vegetables for Venice and
many vegetable gardens continue to grow there today. The island is now designed
mainly for day trips as there are no overnight accommodations, but visitors can come to
enjoy the lush vegetation, quiet restaurants, and the many vineyards that the island was
named for.

During the 7th century, a church was built on the island and dedicated to St. John the
Baptist, but all that remains is a small chapel and bell tower known as St. Erosia's.
Visitors can also stop in to the fortifications of the tiny nearby island of St. Andrea which
were constructed as a military garrison in the 16th century. The best way to see the island
is to make arrangements to stay in Venice and take the ferry from Venice for the day.
