Lech Walesa Airport is situated to the northwest of Gdansk, and is named after the Polish President Lech Walesa, whose stylised signature appears on the outside of the terminal building. The Airport was opened in 1974 and a new terminal opened in 1997. Eight airlines fly throughout Poland and Europe. There is rail access to the airport, and a bus service, numbers 210, 110. Gdansk is the centre of the fourth largest metropolitan area Tricity and is a major seaport, situated on the border of Germany and Western Slavic lands. It has had many political struggles over the centuries. Old Gdansk city was destroyed by the Russian Army, but was rebuilt in the 1950s and 60s. The main economic wealth comes from shipbuilding, engineering, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals manufacture and amber processing (most of the worlds amber lies along the Baltic) as well as tourism. The city hosts major music concerts from time to time and artists such as Pink Floyd, Queen, Jean Michel Jarre and David Gilmour have played here.

There are numerous hotels, but the Dwor Oliwski has five stars and is a 17th century manor house with a spa. A room here costs pln 330. The mercure Hervelius Gdansk has four stars and offers an airport shuttle, conference facilities and a spa. It is situated in the old town 500 metres from the Railway, close to shopping areas.
