The Alfandega Square in the heart of town is no exception: set by the old customs building of Florianopolis, the square is bedecked with fantastic building facades and is crowded over with interesting little stands selling all sorts of local merchandise and artifacts.

Alfandega Square is set in the middle of some of Brazil's finest neoclassical architecture, to be precise. The customs building, known in Portuguese as the Largo da Alfandega, was itself built in 1876, and is presently an epicenter of cultural life in the city. Not only does the Brazilian Institute of Cultural Heritage have a center in the building, but furthermore the Artists Association of the state of Santa Catarina is located on the ground level, where expositions of various kinds are going on all the time. To top it all off, a bar is also located on-site in case there wasn't already enough present.
