Ali Sami Yen Stadium represents the sanctuary for fans around world of the football club Galatasaray SK in Istanbul, Turkey. The name was given after the founder of the club, Ali Sami Yen, and its construction appeared like a necessity after 1939, when Taksim Stadium was demolished. This stadium hosted the derbies between the three big rivals SK, JK and Fenerbahçe SK.
Construction works began in 1943 but during World War II the progress was facing some difficulties and this led to the construction of a small stadium, which was opened in 1945. However, construction of Ali Sami Yen Stadium continued on the site and the current stadium was inaugurated on December 14, 1964.
The stadium is located in Mecidiyeköy, in the, in the Sisli district, one of the most crowded quarters of central European Istanbul, surrounded by dense urban development. The capacity of the stadium consists in 24,000 seats, not much at first look but enough for this arena to gain the nickname of “Hell” for the intimidating atmosphere and the enthusiastic support of the fans. Ali Sami Yen has seen many victories against major powers clubs, such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan, FC Barcelona and many others, but the glory will come to an end in 2010 when the new stadium of Galatasaray, called Aslantepe, will be finished.
Access to Ali Sami Yen is easy, as the stadium is near Taksim Square. There is a subway station near the stadium, called "Sisli Mecidiyeköy", as well as a bus stop for several lines of the Metropolitan Municipality's bus network.
