Almeria Cathedral, also known as the fortress-temple of the south, is the first temple in Almeria that was originally designed to be used as a fortress-temple. Built in a exceptionally Gothic style, this cathedral was originally intended to defend the city against attacks by pirates and other hostilities.

Almeria Cathedral's definitely has an unusual look and the unusually unique design is attributed to Diego de Siloé. The cathedral was built with multiple fortified towers at each corner. Cannons were placed in each of the towers, to retaliate during the frequent pirate attacks on the city. The appearance of the cathedral resembles more with a fortified castle than a cathedral. The altarpiece at the high altar of the cathedral is Baroque and is nicely decorated with very high quality paintings and sculptures. The fortress-temple contains works of fine ancient art by Murillo, Ribera and the like.

The Cathedral is strategically located right in the heart of the old part of the city. While the previous structure was completely destroyed by an earthquake in the year 1522, this cathedral replaced the building in 1904.
