The first municipal park in all of California, Alum Rock Park is a 720 acre park located in the foothills of San Jose's Diablo Range. Those looking for a vigorous or leisurely hike will be thrilled, as there are over 13 miles of trails that accommodate all skill levels. Whether it's a walk down by the creek with some beautiful views of Santa Clara Valley or a quick climb up the ridges of the canyon, it's all possible here.

For those who want an even more extensive nature experience, many of the trails at Alum Rock Park connect to larger trails in the area, including the Boccardo Trail and the Bay Area Ride Trail. Be sure to prepare accordingly if engaging in more hardcore trekking.

Alum Rock Park is also a popular site for relaxing day trips that don't involve hiking boots, with its volleyball courts, playground area, and even space for picnics. A number of different animals make their home in the area, and visitors are likely to see black-tailed deer, California quail, turkey vultures, and even occasionally, a bobcat or mountain lion.

Alum Rock Park is open daily, from sunrise until sunset. A number of hotels are just a short drive away, including the Fairmont San Jose, the Sainte Claire Hotel, and the Hotel De Anza.
