Finland, which is situated in the Fennoscandian region of northern Europe, is a Nordic country that borders Sweden, Russia, Norway, and Estonia. According to archeological evidence Finland was first established around 8,500 BCE during the Stone Age.

Since its first establishment it now homes around 5.3 million people where the native language of all the population is Finnish; the second popular language of Finland being Swedish.

Finland's culture throughout prehistory and history times have at one stage come from many directions; mainly North America, Asia and Africa. The Finnish population are also greatly attached to the outdoors, so much so that a long standing tradition associated with the Finnish culture is that of a cottage life by a lake, which in most cases includes attending a sauna, swimming and barbecuing.

The country also has a deep cultural heritage. One particular landmark that adds to Finland's cultural heritage is that of the Alvar Aalto Museum which is in Jyvaskyla, 270km from the Helsinki capital.

Founded in 1966, the museum of architecture and design is a building designed by the Finnish architecture and designer Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto, who was also called the 'Father of Modernism'.

Upon walking through the doors of the museum, visitors will see his works on architecture, furniture, textiles and glassware. Here visitors can explore his works as they depict the rapid economic growth and industrialization that Finland experienced during the first half of the 20th century.

A permanent exhibition on Alvar Aalto's work which officially opened in 1998, marking the 100 years since the birth of Aalto, is also available for visitors to explore.

Opening times: Tuesday to Sunday from 11am - 18:00. Mondays are closed.

Admission: Adults €6.00; Students and Senior citizens €2.00. Admission is free on Fridays from October 1st 2009 - May 31st 2010.

Despite Finland being so far north it is warmed by the Gulf Stream and is warmer than a country that would be in the same latitude, for example Canada making it an ideal destination. Whenever a trip to Finland is undertaken; whether during the winter break where you can experience a true white Christmas in Finnish Lapland, or if it is during the summer's brown bear watching season, Finland is a country that offers breathtaking scenery throughout its vast region.
