Amarillo International Airport (AMA)

Hotels near Amarillo International Airport (AMA), Amarillo, United States .

The Amarillo International Airport is a public airport, which can be found near the Texas town of Amarillo. The airport opened in 1929, and in that same year, Transcontinental and Western Air flew the first flight services through the location. These original aircraft carriers operated services connecting Amarillo to Chicago, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. The name changed to Amarillo Air Terminal in 1952, after the nearby air force base was converted to partial civilian usage. In 2007, the airport became one of the few in the United States to have a space shuttle make a stop there—the Shuttle Atlantis stopped over on its way back to the base in Florida. The airport was renamed the Rick Husband Amarillo Airport in 2003 after Amarillo native Rick Husband died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Today, there are two runways, which accommodate approximately 270 aircraft operations daily.
