Established in 1967, the American Film Institute in Los Angeles, California, is a nonprofit organization founded out of the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act. The American Film Institute, or AFI for short, had many famous founders supporting its goals to educate and preserve traditions in film, like Gregory Peck, Sidney Poitier, and Francis Ford Coppola. The AFI Conservatory runs a two-year program educating students in a hands-on environment, with specializations in one of six areas, including Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Production Design, Producing, and Screenwriting. The Institute is also the founder of the Center for Advanced Film Studies at Greystone, Doheny Mansion (1969). AFI also hosts the annual awards ceremony, AFI Awards, and two film festivals, AFI Fest, and AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs documentary festival in Maryland.
