Located right at Aquarium Wharf, right next to the IMAX theater and the new Fort Sumter Dock, where daily ferries depart for tours of historic Fort Sumter, the museum has a wide variety of items from wars of the distant past, as well as from contemporary conflicts.

Starting back at The Revolutionary War, the museum has a vast collection of interesting war-related items that you wouldn't necessarily expect to see in a museum in a sleepy southern town, including Dwight D. Eisenhower's original star rank insignia. But for most travelers to the south, the big draw for historical items and informations relates more to The Civil War, and that's where the museum really shines, with a number of interesting and rare pieces in its collection.

Visitors are free to wander about the museum's 70 display cases, which display a veritable cornucopia of uniforms, medals, flags, and more quirky items from all over the world. There's also the option, if you are more into a structured look at the collection, of taking one of the daily guided tours.

The American Military Museum is open seven days a week, from ten in the morning until six in the afternoon on Monday through Saturday, and on Sundays from one until five in the afternoon.
