American Printing House for the Blind, the world’s largest organization devoted to the research and manufacturing of products for the visually impaired, was established in 1858. It is the oldest organization in the U.S. devoted to the education of the blind. APH is the official supplier of materials for blind students working below the college level.

Mainly a printing house for Braille, larger print and audio materials APH operates out of a 280,000 square foot building on 1839 Frankfort Avenue in Louisville. Hours of business are from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. The museum on the premises is dedicated to the history of the education of the blind, featuring artifacts, photos and more. The museum is open during business hours and from 10:30 to 3 on Saturday. Guided tours of the plant and museum are available. Visitors can see how the Braille books are made. Free tours are offered between 10 am and 2 pm from Monday to Thursday and last 1.5 hours.
