Amphiteatre

The ruins of the Roman Amphiteatre from Trier, Germany are datting from the first century AD.

This place was used for gladiator’s fights and animals contests in the Roman Imperial Area (until the 5th century). The entire structure is made of a stepped auditorium and an elliptical arena and was surrounded by a high wall, which was divided into individual stories by colonnaded arcades. It was partly dug inside the slope of the hill located on the east of the city. Up to 25000 peoples could be seated by the complex, but it was not a very large scale for a building of the kind, being only about half the size of the one of Verona. A vast basement where criminals, gladiators and exotic beasts were kept prior to their release into the arena could be found underneath the arena. Today, the Antiquity Festival and open air concerts are housed by the arena because although much is now missing or ruined, the atmospheric remains of the Amphiteatre do give a good insight into the History of Trier.

The city of Trier is full of touristy attractions, being a very old city, founded by Trebeta, an Asyrrian prince, centuries before the Ancient Rome. The main attractions are The Porta Nigra, the ruins of the Roman baths, the huge Constantine Basilica and the Roman Bridge.

Regular bus routes are making the connection between the city and the Amphiteatre.
