Aci Castello Accommodation

The city is situated about 9 kilometers north of Catania on the Mediterranean coast. The town rises over a beautiful gulf, just beneath a rocky cliff forged through 1000s of years by the magma from undersea eruptions, on which rises the imposing Norman castle.

Places to visit in Aci Castello include sites like The Norman castle, which was constructed with the same lava rock of the cliffs in the 11th century whose fortress rises on a highly strategic position, controlling the ships directed to the Messina strait; the Museo Civico, which has great deal of items from Sicily's past ages, a nature section and a botanical garden; the Parco Letterario del Verga which has open-air paths through the landscapes as described in the novels and short stories of the great Italian writer. Other attractions in Aci Castello are 'Le storie del Castello di Trezza', a steamship trip to the 'Grotte di Ulisse' where the Malavoglia boat finds its tragic final destiny; and the 16th century parish church of San Mauro, which has a silver-plated statue of the saint. A trip up to the Aetna is required to visit the farmhouses as well as a night-time boat ride on the 'lampare’.

There are also numerous events which are held in Aci Castello and the main event is held on the 24 June at Acitrezza, this is the feast of patron San Giovanni Battista called 'U pisci a mari'.
