or Ancona accommodation? Ancona is a city and a seaport in Marche, a region in central Italy. Ancona is situated on the Adriatic Sea and is the center of the province of Ancona. The city is located 280 km northeast of Rome and 200 km southeast of Bologna. The town is neatly located between the slopes of the two members of the promontory of Monte Conero, Monte Astagno which has the citadel, and Monte Guasco, on which the Duomo stands. Monte Guasco is dedicated to St Judas Cyriacus, and is said to occupy the site of a temple belonging to the deity Venus. Ancona’s main attraction is the beautiful 11th Century Cathedral, which is dedicated to St. Ciriaco. This place is a must see for anyone who visits the country. Other attractions of the city include The marble Arch of Trajan, which is one of the finest Roman monuments in the Marche; the pentagonal building called the Luigi Vanvitelli which was built in the 17th century and the Episcopal Palace where the Pope died in 1464. There are also quite a few fine medieval buildings, including the churches of S. Agostino and the Palazzo Benincasathat is worth a visit.
