One interesting sight to see in Athens is the double-barreled canon, which is displayed outside the city hall. Although it was never fired, it’s still a very interesting relic of the civil war. Another interesting attraction is ‘The Tree That Owns Itself.’ Although the original tree died a few years ago, this is its offspring, and, having been willed to itself by Colonel W.H. Jackson, it really does belong to itself!
The three hundred and thirteen acre Georgia Botanical Gardens is another attraction worth visiting when in Athens, as is the Museum of Natural History, and the Museum of Art, and there are several other sights to visit in this city.
Athens is, of course, in the heart of the South, so food is a big part of local culture, and for some of the best local fare, Five and Ten is a great choice. There are, of course, many other options, offering a wide range of cuisines, so feel free to indulge. When it comes to accommodation, you are spoilt for choice too. Athens has two Holiday Inns, the Hilton Garden Inn, the Best Western Colonial Inn and several other large hotel chains represented, all near the centre of town, and there are plenty of smaller establishments too.
