Anyone familiar with nursery rhymes will remember the line ‘Ride a cock horse to Banbury cross.’ What you might not know is that there is, in fact, a town called Banbury, and it is located in Oxfordshire, England. Getting around Banbury is easy thanks to local taxi companies, and while there, seeing the famous Banbury Cross, which is a memorial dating back to 1859, commemorating the royal wedding of Prince Frederick of Prussia. It is not, however, the original cross, which was torn down some two hundred and fifty years before that. The Banbury Museum will provide more information on the town, which is long and interesting. Other historic attractions include the parish church of St Mary’s, on which building was started in the 18th century, and several old pubs and inns, like Ye Olde Reindeer Inn, which was built in the 16th century. The old market still operates on Thursday and Saturday too, with farmer’s markets every first Friday of the month, but there are more modern amenities, like the Banbury Cross Retail Park and Castle Quay Shopping Centre.
