Plans for the city were laid out by one Joseph Ellicot, a surveyor for the Holland Land Company. It was named Batavia, the traditional name for The Netherlands. The town is divided into several neighborhoods, among them Bushville, Daw’s Corners, East Pembroke, and West Batavia, to name a few. Bushville is where William H. and Louisa Post Bush came to build their three mills which drew quite a number of workers to live in the area. Apart from increasing the number of people who live in Bushville, it also led to the establishment of a district school and a church.

The town is complete with shops, restaurants and diners, a post office, churches and stores. Batavia also has a number of recreational parks, among them Kiwanis Park located on the north bank of the Tonawanda Creek. It is home to a playground, two open-air shelters, picnic tables, grills, and two tennis courts. Other interesting attractions include the Rochester Institute of Technology, Ralph Wilson Stadium, and the Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track, all within easy access from the city center.
